THE RACE TO IMPROVE What’s on my desk? It’s hard for me to give any answer without AI. I work with customers for Google Cloud, and my job is to help understand what the best use cases are that we can help with technology solutions, and AI is the center of attention. It’s getting all the attention and it’s going to be like that for a while. The most interesting part is that companies jumped into this race of who’s going to do the best implementation with this new technology first. Who’s going to be the first? Now it’s changing in terms of who is going to do it better. It’s not about being first. It’s about being better. That means we are now seeing the evolution of where this technology is applied. I would say that’s on all our desks—to identify those areas where we can apply this better. In 2023, we had seen a standard set of one or two applications that had become rinse and repeat—even for us, and it was easy for us. But now, people want to move beyond those initial applications. HAVING A PLAN FOR THE FUTURE From a discipline perspective, I would say that when we think about innovation—this was a pattern that I’ve seen in corporation innovation in the last few years—is that it is
always connected with something that is ten years down the line. It is always connected with something that’s going into research and development, and it’s going to take a while. It’s always going to come up when we do product launches a few years down the line. In the short-term, it has always been about the low- hanging fruits that we can achieve. “If we are still doing innovation in the way we used to in 2020, thinking about only five or ten years down the line, then we’ll miss out on opportunities because everything is changing so fast.”
