FEI 2024 & Key Innovation Perspectives - OPEN

BRIDGING THE DATA GAP In every corporation, we have this unintentional air gap between the people who understand the business and the people who manage the structured data. AI is changing that dynamic.

Leslie Shannon, Head of Trend & Innovation Scouting, Nokia

The two watchwords for 2024 are trust and security. You must trust the data and the outputs that are coming from your corporate generative AI. The only way you do that is by very carefully curating the data that goes into it. There’s a lot of will toward corporate innovation, but I still see a lot of execution hurdles. A lot of innovations offer some sort of challenge to the status quo, and I see a lot of corporations having trouble accepting that challenge to the status quo and stepping off the cliff into the unknown, which true innovation really requires.

It depends on the corporation, but it can shade from pure inertia to people actively guarding their political fiefdoms and actively resisting any kind of threat to that.

The evolving job function of innovation is something I’m pleased to see. It seems there is more willingness to have people who are full-time devoted to the idea of innovation. I’m meeting more of those people from other companies now. It’s the growing awareness of the power of the ecosystem and realizing that working with others—particularly other external companies— is a good way to achieve your innovation without upending your apple cart. Partnership as a way forward is something I’m starting to see take hold. LOOKING FORWARD My job is to be a forward-looking futurist. Understanding how generative AI is going to change everything that I’ve been thinking and that I’ve been predicting—I’m trying to keep myself honest about where it’s going to be good for my industry and company and where it’s going to be a challenge. It’s having to look at things as they are. Two things within the innovation discipline need to be improved. Improving the ability of large corporations to work with very small companies and startups— that’s a continuing thread
