Instead, I’d love to see them say, “We identified this foresight trend which we think can help you. We think it would fit right into the strategy and can help you be very successful. It will help you to implement that foresight trend and create a solution. We see in three or six months, consumers are going to do X, Y, and Z. Not only do we already have that prediction, but we also solve for it, and we can help you to succeed.” or innovators need the solutions; not only the tools to solve but also to understand those trends and how to solve them and what the customized solution would be. That’s pivotal. We can talk about some other attributes, support, cost, and everything else, but I think being visionary is the most important. The reason why is that innovation is a very nonstandard practice, and you need to have more diversity, not only in terms of the backgrounds of people working there but in terms of the experiences they bring to the table. You can teach a person some techniques, human-centered design, or a methodology, but the perspective people bring from different industries and backgrounds is very important. Innovation has an opportunity as a function to embrace that as one of the early adopters within the corporate world. They wouldn’t be looking at your background in terms of compartmentalizing your experience, but saying, “We need somebody with a totally different experience because it’s going to help us to create nonstandard approaches and solutions for our internal and external clients.”
