THE AI EVOLUTION AI has been evolving for years, beyond ChatGPT. If you think about AI and active listening models and LLMs, those have been around for quite some time. In 2023, the adoption of ChatGPT was just exploding. Now things have settled out. We’re starting to realize that AI and LLMs can be very powerful tools to help boost creativity and increase productivity. AI can be used to synthesize large amounts of information and help to progress things along at a much faster rate than would typically happen previously. Everybody is still learning how to use it. The use cases that I’ve seen be most effective have been more in an operations function where you’ve got a lot of data and you’re using that data to optimize and make it more efficient. I think there’s a bit of trust and authenticity that we must balance with AI. We’ve had this forever with different imaging software, but now people are making deep fakes. Is this real? Is this a real human? There’s some ethics and authenticity that we need to work through. Everybody is in a learning mode to see how we can best utilize this tool in a way that promotes innovation goals.
explore innovation because no matter what you do, it’s disruptive to the organization.
Most companies gain the most efficiency by creating “a thing” that has all the same specifications. And when you talk about innovation, you’re typically breaking that paradigm. You’re coming in with something new that’s a different shape, a different liquid, a different service—something’s different, so it will be disruptive. The way that we can improve is by helping people feel more comfortable with change. Helping people see the vision of what innovation can do, can be, and can provide for their organizations—creating that excitement around being in an innovation function. There’s a lot of stress with being an innovator. There’s a lot of uncertainty, a lot of ambiguity, but turning that stress around and trying to tip it more toward the excitement of unveiling the possibility of the future is where we can improve. Realizing that you’re at the cutting edge of what could be and the possibility of what that future is—that’s very exciting. It’s very hopeful and opportunistic. It’s very forward- thinking.
