Follow Scott Anderson, a retired Food Service Director, as he travels the country meeting and learning the exciting stories of other School Food Service Programs. When developing this program, Scott realized that many students in our country will only get one good meal a day, the meal served to them at school. As a former food service director and principal, it is his passion to tell the fantastic stories, of how school nutrition programs are feeding our children in innovative and exciting ways. In Episode 2, Mechanicville City School District, like many schools around the nation, were thriving for a farm to school program. Several things were initially preventing them from doing so: purchasing power, storage for buying in quantity, and making sure it worked within their budget. By pooling their efforts with other
similar sized school districts, working with a local food bank to help distribute and store excess crop, and utilizing the state reimbursement program, the school nutrition program was able to push forward. This created better tasting food for their kids, which led to higher student participation and higher funding from the state. Everyone has a story to tell, and it can be hard to get that story out to the school food service community. These stories are what he looks forward to telling so other school districts will be inspired with ideas that they can use to better their program. Better food programs mean feeding kids more nutritiously with great tasting food. Together, we can be sure kids are taken care of while creating better generations.
