Food for Thought Spring 2023

Award BY DONNA DAGER

FOOD SERVICE COORDINATOR EAST ALLEN COUNTY SCHOOLS

East Allen County Schools has implemented a cafeteria reward system. Each month, all school staff can nominate a kitchen staff member. Consideration is based on the nominee’s ability to meet the following criteria:

• Regularly goes above & beyond the call of duty. • Possesses a high level of integrity and trust. • Has the respect and admiration of the students & staff. • Exhibits professionalism. • Consistently & positively impacts the students & the school community.

Michele goes above & beyond her job description without even being asked. She works on cold lunches after running a breakfast line. She helps the head cook, helps with fruit & vegetable prep, and in the dish room. She helps with the baking & bagging of cookies and refilling of condiments without being asked. She is all over the kitchen & helps wherever and whenever. She also has an amazing relationship with a lot of our students. She is very friendly with them. She is a very big help to our younger students and goes out of her way to learn their names.

Jill has been an outstanding addition to the Alternative School team. Before Jill’s arrival, the food had been prepared off-site and transported to the school. This was sufficient, but Jill is now preparing the food on- site and doing a fantastic job. She takes great care in her presentation of the food, always working hard to make it look as appetizing as possible. We have students eating more fruit & healthier lunches than we have ever had before. In addition to Jill’s hard work in preparing & presenting the food, she has

gone above & beyond expectations in her interactions with the students. She has built relationships with the students and is always friendly and helpful. She knows the students by name and makes them feel welcome in the cafeteria.

Jessica is such a vital part of the kitchen. She works hard every day, no matter the day, how she is feeling, or what goes wrong. She has a goofy, uplifting & kind attitude. She cares about the quality of her work and the happiness of the students! She somehow (no matter how very busy she is) makes every day a better workday for those around her. She is someone we can all trust & depend on. Her work ethic is a great example to us all every day! Jessica regularly works ahead so that she can help put the delivery away… ”My body thanks her!” She also works hard to ensure that all 11 gluten-free, 6 dairy- free, numerous vegetarian & special diet kids, and 1 vegan – are well taken care of. She tries to make their meals as close to the regular meal each day as possible. She creates new menu items for them regularly. Jessica is the life of the kitchen. She’s always singing, laughing, or hollering her funny little “Ohh Yeahhh!” I’m so thankful to have her in our kitchen.

Jill is making a big difference at the Alt. school & we are extremely thankful to have her as part of our team. There has not been one complaint since she arrived, whereas there used to be several. We love Jill. Jill is always on time. She is great at dealing with

the students & staff. Students are happy to have “real” lunches again. Jill has made such a positive change in our kitchen. She goes above for ALL students and staff. She’s always positive & smiling. She is a great staff member for the Alternative/Career Center. The students look forward to eating again.
