C hildren are like little sponges, soaking up influences that shape their tastes and food preferences. Pop culture is an especially powerful driver of Gen Alpha’s interests, helping to spark their curiosity around new flavors and dishes. Whether it’s mashups or global cuisine, operators who stay on top of the food trends students are seeing can create exciting menus. POP FOOD CULTURE While millennials were more adventurous diners than previous generations, Gen Alpha may just have them beat. Over half (58%) say they’re more adventurous with food than their parents, who likely grew up seeing items such as fish sticks and mac and cheese on kids’ menus. These simple dishes have given way to flavor fusions, innovative formats and global fare, thanks in part to screens large and small. For example, after the popular children’s movie, K-Pop Demon Hunters , was released, online searches for “Korean food” increased by 75%, revealing the impact of media on dining interests. Digital foodie content is also inspiring young people to broaden their culinary horizons, as 70% of Gen Alpha say they’ve tried a new food they saw on social media, and 45% say they watch people eat new things online. To keep up with students’ evolving tastes, operators should watch for cultural moments like these and find creative ways to incorporate them into fun, themed dishes.
