WHY HOSPITALITY IS EVERYONE’S JOB
Y ou can have the best- looking menu in the serving line, promote your meals and serve food you are genuinely proud of. But if a student gets to the line and is met with impatience, confusion or indifference, that interaction may outweigh everything else you worked so hard to build. Because your staff are your brand. Not your logo. Not your colors. Not your menu template. Your brand is the experience students have with your program district. You can rename your entrees, improve your signage, upgrade your
every single day. And for most students, that experience is delivered by the person standing behind the serving line, working the register, answering questions, restocking food or helping them move through the cafeteria. That is a major mindset shift. The Lunch Line Is Your Front Door For many students, the serving line is their primary interaction with your entire program. They do not see the hours of preparation that happened before lunch. They do not know how difficult procurement was
that week. They do not see the staffing shortage you are managing. They do not know about the paperwork, regulations, production records or budget pressures behind the scenes. They know how they were treated when they walked through the line. They know whether someone smiled. They know whether the person serving them seemed proud of the food. They know whether their question was answered respectfully. They know whether they felt welcomed - or whether they felt like the next person who simply needed to move through the line. That experience becomes their perception of your program.
