HOUSTON ISD’S FOOD AND AGRICULTURE LITERACY PROGRAM LEADS THE WAY

By Marcus Glenn

In an era where food insecurity, climate change, and health disparities intersect, Houston Independent School District (HISD) is sowing the seeds of change—literally. Through our innovative Food and Agriculture Literacy Program, HISD is empowering students, families and educators have more than a consumer relationship with food and make informed, sustainable, and health-conscious food choices.

Rooted in Innovative Educational Programs At the heart of the program is our simple yet transformative mission: to students and families have more than a consumer relationship with food. This mission is met through our educational programs that go beyond traditional nutrition lessons. I’ll focus on five initiatives we’re doing that’s going beyond the cafeteria.

PTA/O Garden Support As part of our Farm to School proposal, we included the opportunity to engage Parent Teacher Associations/Organizations in school gardening activities. We partnered with the Whole Kids Foundation to provide funding for the effort and with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension to conduct gardening and nutrition education classes for parents. Through this effort we’ll provide support to 10 PTA/O groups to support their school garden for two years.
