When schools ex- pand wellness efforts beyond the cafeteria—through family engage- ment, hands-on learning, and shared experiences—they have the poten- tial to influence habits at home and ripple outward into the broader com- munity. These programs can spark conversations around the dinner table, introduce new foods and skills to families, and build a culture of health that extends well beyond the school day. School wellness has grown far beyond the cafeteria line—it’s now a powerful way to connect classrooms, kitch- ens, and communities in sup- port of lifelong health. In this article, we highlight how we have supported wellness programming that is elevated beyond the menu, creating meaningful opportunities to engage students and families alike. From sparking student inter- est through menu item attributes to delivering practical nutrition educa- tion and hands-on culinary experi- ences, these strategies help build knowledge, confidence, and health- ier habits at home. Our work celebrates how we can cultivate relationships with food that support well being. INNOVATE It’s not always a simple checklist - tri- ennial wellness should and can be a living and breathing way of life in your school community. We had the pleasure of working with Orange City Schools to create a “deep dive” stra- tegic plan and path forward for their districts wellness policy and prac- tices. From an active and engaged stakeholder group, to a presentation and plan - this district turned over every leaf, and made a plan to make progress happen. A year later, and evaluation - they are not only well on their way to improvements, but a sense of what can happen when com- munities come together and collabor- ate for the greater good!
